New Sengkang wetland part of ongoing effort to beautify water bodies

WHENEVER Punggol Central resident Tini Norahmad, 28, wants to let her two boys, aged three and one, enjoy the calming effect of water, she heads to the Woodlands waterfront area near the Causeway. But that means putting up with an hour-long bus journey.

Now she has a better option, which is a 15-minute ride by Light Rapid Transit (LRT) to the Anchorvale Community Club.

This comes with the opening of the Sengkang Floating Wetland on Sunday, a floating structure built in a stretch of the Punggol Reservoir near the CC.

The wetland, which is connected by bridges to two banks of the reservoir, also provides a sanctuary for birds and fish.

Ms Tini, an administrative executive, said: 'It's a good idea to have a place nearby where we can enjoy walking next to the water, without having to travel too far.'

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who opened the wetland on Sunday, said it was part of ongoing efforts to revitalise Singapore's water bodies into clean, pleasant and bustling community spaces for the benefit of residents.

Two-car solution for LRTs

THE Light Rail Transit (LRT) cars in Sengkang and Punggol are jam-packed during the morning and evening peak hours, and transport planners are looking to do something about it.


The Straits Times saw that each car had people standing right up against the doors when it visited the Sengkang and Compassvale stations at the end of last month. Some commuters, unable to board, had no choice but to wait for the next one.


Each of these single-car, driverless pods can carry 105 commuters.


The Land Transport Authority (LTA), anticipating a future spike in ridership, told The Straits Times that it is looking into using two train cars on each run that the LRT takes on raised tracks through Sengkang and Punggol.


The two-car solution has been implemented successfully elsewhere. Japanese engineering company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries - which supplied the one-car LRT system for Sengkang, Punggol and Changi Airport - has installed two-car systems at the Atlanta and Miami airports in the United States.


Residents in the area have raised the issue with their Members of Parliament Lam Pin Min and Michael Palmer. Dr Lam has proposed increasing the frequency of trains and running more bus services as interim measures.

SINGAPORE - A new hospital would most likely be built in the north-east, according to Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan.


Punggol 21 is among the sites that have been suggested, he said yesterday.


The new general hospital would likely be built in the second half of the decade to serve the expanding population living in the north-east. While it is not yet a firm commitment, he said it is inevitable, given the expanding population.


Mr Khaw hinted it would be located near an MRT station as access to public transportation was essential for patients.


He said: "Punggol 21 is expanding ... In the north-east, it is really the Sengkang and Punggol area because the population in the future will be quite significant."


Speaking at a healthcare quality improvement conference, he also said the ground-breaking for the new Jurong General Hospital will take place next month. It will open before 2015 to serve the residents living in the west.


Turning to the issue of quality improvement, Mr Khaw said the healthcare industry can adapt proven strategies from other sectors like engineering to ensure that patients always receive care that is appropriate and delivered correctly.


This means processes such as standardisation, documentation, measurement and quality control should be in place.


He noted that most hospitals are also now accredited with the United States Joint Commission International (JCI), signifying they are part of a global movement in search of better quality and safety solutions to benefit patients.


Mr Khaw urged the hospitals to participate in the work of the commission and similar agencies, to help co-develop practical solutions and to learn from others.
